Different four ways to visit Machu Picchu

How to get to Machu Picchu ?, is one of the most frequent questions that we receive frequently in Discovering Inca Trail in the following post, we will show you four different routes to get to one of the “Seven Wonders of the Machu Picchu World”.

1.- Via Train:

The map shows the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo, as it is the shortest and most frequent route. There is also a train from Cusco, but only Peru Rail offers it and some of its top services. To go from Cusco to Ollantaytambo there are several buses and vans that operate throughout the day. You just have to ask any taxi or the hotel about the whereabouts. More than 2 years ago I was 10 soles per person in the vans.

Currently there are two companies: Peru Rail and Inca Rail. For Peruvians there is a local train whose purchase of the ticket is with DNI.

2.- Via Santa Teresa

It is recommended to go when it is NOT rainy season. The rainy season is usually from December to March, however you never know with the weather. It is always best to ask at tourist information stands if the route is in good condition on the dates of your trip.

3.- Inca Trail

It is the most famous and well preserved road of the entire Inca road extension that the Inca Empire had.

They are cobbled routes that cross important archaeological complexes like: Huayllabamba, Runcuracay,

Sayacmarca, Puyupatamarca, Huíñayhuayna and Intipuncu until arriving at the great citadel of Machu Picchu.
It is a trekking that can last 4 or 2 days depending on the point from where you start walking. It is mandatory to go with a guide and that is why it is necessary to hire an Inca trail tour. It should be reserved in advance as there is a maximum number of tickets per day, in order to protect the place.

4.- Salkantay Trekking

As the Inca road became so famous, it is difficult to get a space if it is not booked well in advance and its prices increased due to the high demand. For this reason, many people started to go by the Salkantay route, which you can go on your own (it is always better to hire a local guide not to get lost) or by hiring a tour of a travel agency.

The minimum duration to know Machu Picchu by the Salkantay route is 5 days, it is recommended that people who opt for this route are in good physical condition, since this walk is of a high level of exigency.
