Overview

Huchuy Qosqo trek is one of the best hiking trips in the Peruvian Andean Mountains. Locals consider this one of the best and shorter trekkings situated in the Sacred Valley and tourist who’ve made this hike have enjoyed it. You will walk along along beautiful lagoons, Andean comunities and amazing archeological sites on the way to Machu Picchu. In this trek, we will visit one of the Inca complexes that is not visited by many tourists. Huchuy Qosqo is located at an altitude of 2400 meters above the sea level and close to the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. This attraction is supposed to be a building for one of the most prestigious Inca kings, Pachacutec. We will take a train to Aguas Calientes and spending the night there. The next day we will visit Machu Picchu, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the world.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

We recommend you buy the tour in advance to be able to book your entrance to Machupicchu at the earliest times and thus enjoy more time in the Inca citadel and with less tourist agglomeration.

If you wish you can rent an extra horse and put all your stuff for $ 50.00.

After your visit to Machupicchu we will include the return train in Expedition Service but if you want to take an early or panoramic train, ask for availability and extra cost.

Itinerary

DAY 1 AUCA – HUCHUY QOSQO

We pick passengers up from their hotels at 07:00 and arrive to Chinchero after a 50 minute drive. There, we will see beautiful landscape and a big lagoon. We will continue with our transport for 15 minutes and arrive to Tauca, a small Andean village. At this point, we will meet the rest of the staff amd the horsemen who will bring the horses to help us carry all our camping equipment and meals as well. You can put some of your stuff on the horses. Our cook, horsemen, and horses escort us through semiarid terrain along the Sacred Valley, where will see get magnificent views of snow-capped mountains. We leave Urubamba valley and have a long trek for almost 7 hours until we get to Huchuy Qosqo.

On this trek there will be amazing views of lagoons, Andean villages, and the dark blue lake of Piuray. We will climb a pass on the way that is situated at (3,800m – 12,467ft). Then, we continue to Tauqaq, a small Andean Village where we will see some archaeological sites. In this area, you’ll get a look at traditional local life, as there wil be many colorfully dressed children and women, and we will see their llamas and alpacas. We will also see farmworkers and people who take care of their animals. They sometimes take part in truque (bartering) and we will ascend to the final pass of Pumamarka (4,200 m. – 13,770 ft.) We will see some Inca remains, after which we will follow the farms to Pumamarka from this point you will a beautiful view of the Valley of the Inkas. This includes snow peaks and tranquil farms. After that you will arrive to Huchuy Qosqo where we will spend the night in tents, with a nice dinner, a clear sky and stars. (1 lunch – 1 dinner).

DAY 2 HUCHUY QOSQO – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES

The most exciting day to visit Huchuy Qosqo, early in the morning the cook will prepare delicious breakfast and the you will start your visit to this complex where the guide will explain the area’s history. The guide will also discuss the Sacred Valley and APUS (tradional gods in the Sacred Valley, such as snow peaks, rivers, and mountains of this region). The weather and altitude in this area will be great and beneficial for your health. It is situated at 2800 masl and the temperature is warm. This was a refuge built by Pachaquteq, one of the best Inka governors. During the day you will have time to take pictures of this scenery and the amazing view of the Sacred valley with big corn plantations.

After visiting Huchuy Qosqo, we will begin descending to Lamay, a small town in the Sacred Valley where we are going to meet with our driver. We will have a nice lunch and then drive 1 hour to Ollantaytambo. From this point we will take the train to Machu Picchu. Depending on the train’s availability, it could be the 15:37hs or 19:00hs train. You will arrive to Aguas Calientes, the town bellow Machu Picchu and spend the night at a hostel in Aguas Calientes. You will have a comforting dinner and can relax in the thermal baths. (1 breakfast – 1 lunch – 1 dinner). (1 breakfast – 1 lunch – 1 dinner).

DAY 3 MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

This will be a spectacular day! Your will climb to Machu Picchu after breakfast. Your hike one and a half hour hike will take you to the majestic empire of Machu Picchu. We recommend you start hiking early in the morning. The idea is to see the sunrise in Machu Picchu before it gets too crowded with tourists from Cusco and Inca Trail. Once at the complex, your guide will explain and answer your questions regarding this impressive complex. Machu Picchu one of the wonders of the world ,means “Old Peak.” Located at 2429 meters – 7970 feet above sea level. You will have a guided tour for about two hours. Then you will have free time to explore the Machu Picchu by yourself. If you pay an extra fee, you can climb up Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain in front the ruins (are limited spots to these sites). Huaynapicchu Mountain +MP costs $20.00 more than the regular entry, as does Machu Picchu Mountain. After the tour there will be plenty of time to take pictures, walk around the most important places, such as the sun gate or the Inka bridge. Then you will descend to Aguas Calientes to take the train to Ollantaytambo, and from there we include a bus ride to Cusco (1 breakfast).
