Overview

This is the shortest trek to Machu Picchu, but it is still one of the world’s greatest hiking trips. During these two days, we will hike through the real Inca trail. The trail traverses the Peruvian Andes, which intersect with the Amazon rain forest. This trek is adorned with many Inca buildings that give this hiking tour a unique sense of beauty. The Inca trail ends at Machu Picchu where you will have a complete guided tour around the citadel.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We recommend you book the tour in advance as spaces are limited only 500 spaces a day to which the counting will be done with guides and support staff as porters.

After your visit to Machupicchu we will include the return train in Expedition Service but if you want to take an early or panoramic train, ask for availability and extra cost.

Itinerary

DAY 1 CUSCO – KM 104 – WIÑAY WAYNA – MACHU PICCHU

We will pick you up in Cusco 04:00hs (4am) to start the transfer to the train station in Ollantaytambo, 2 hours away from Cusco. Then we take a train up to the 104km area. At this point we will check in with local controls and will start trekking for approximately 3 hours until we arrive to the well-preserved remains of Wiñay Wayna (9512 ft). On the way we will see beautiful waterfalls. After a deluxe boxed lunch, we will take a break and you will be free to explore the ruins, including houses, terraces, towers and a local museum. We can also visit Inti Punku, also known as the sun gate. FWe will get our first sight of Machu Picchu from there. Finally, we’ll cross the ridge that leads to our destination. The full sight of the greatest archaeological discovery of modern times is revealed. we will take the tourist shuttle down to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night at a hostal. (Meals: Lunch and dinner).

Distance hike: 14 km - Hours: Between 5 to 6 hours.

DAY 2 MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

After an early breakfast, a guide will meet passengers at their hostel lobby or at the main square so we can start the 1 and a half hour hike. Alternatively, you can take a 30 minute bus costing US$15.00 each way. You will visit the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu there and have a two hour guided tour. After this, you will have free time to explore the ruins yourself. After this awesome visit, passengers will return to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) and enjoy a delicious lunch and dinner on their own. You can also buy snacks the day before to bring to Machu Picchu so you can prepare your own lunch. After your visit, you will take the Expedition backpacker train back to Ollantaytambo and then the shared bus to return to Cusco.

The cost of our trip is based on double occupancy hostel rooms. If you are travelling alone and wish to share, we will assign a same-sex roommate if one is available. If you wish to have your own room, you need to pay extra to cover the room’s expenses. You can always upgrade your accommodation if you wish. Ask us about this option. All services in this tour package including food, buses and hostels are good, safe and clean.

NOTE: We included the last train at 18:20 or 21:50 arrival time to Cusco at 22:30 or 01:40am but if you want to take different type of train as a Vistadome or early train ask for this, extra payment and see the details below:
